Overdenture treatment stages
The overdenture treatment has different stages. These stages are the same for most patients and cannot be ignored or skipped. These stages are described below so you can better understand this treatment.
Stage 1
The first stage includes teeth extractions, if necessary. In some cases where there is an associated infection, the extractions are performed some time in advance. If there are no infections, the teeth are extracted and the implants are placed on the same day. Once this procedure is complete, it will take the implants attached to the bone a few months to be fully integrated. This process takes three to four months.
It is very important to respect the recovery period, during which the jaw bone cells will surround the titanium screw. This is known as the healing period.
Stage 2
A healing cap is placed once the implant is integrated into the jaw bone. This cap should remain in place for a few days in order to shape the gums. After this time, we remove the healing cap and make a model of your mouth. This model is cast in plaster and sent to the dental laboratory.
You need to try on your dentures, so there will be some appointments where you will choose the size of the teeth, as well as the colour and shape that best fit your face. Before you leave, we’ll give you instructions on how to maintain and care for your denture.

It is necessary to evaluate the amount of bone available in your jaw. That’s why the dentist asks for a panoramic x-ray and a 3D CAT scan. With these tests, the dentist evaluates your case and decides whether or not there is need for bone grafting or a maxillary sinus lift.

Hygiene is extremely important when it comes to preserving your treatment for many, many years. You need to clean the implants and the dentures on a regular basis. Use soft toothbrushes and rinse your mouth with water or pharmaceutical products. Use dental floss around the implants. Immerse them in water and clean them with a soft toothbrush. Clean your overdentures every day.
